Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) supplies Irvine from a blend: local groundwater, groundwater from the Orange County Groundwater Basin (managed by the Orange County Water District) and, to a lesser degree, surface water that the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California imports from the State Water Project and the Colorado River Aqueduct.
Safe to drink, with taste that varies
IRWD says its 2025 drinking water met or exceeded every state and federal standard. It disinfects with chloramines, and since the supply is blended, the district notes that taste and hardness can shift at different times of year. Some offices filter at the tap for that reason.

How does the 7-stage filtration process work?
It’s a seven-step sequence. Sediment filtration catches dirt and rust first, then a pre-carbon filter takes out chlorine and chemicals, and the RO/UF membrane reduces metals and dissolved solids. After that come pH balancing, sanitization, a nutrient boost that puts minerals back and a final taste and odor polish. The Avalanche only makes ice, and its ice goes through the same stages.
Do I change the filter myself, or does a technician come out?
A technician comes out. Irvine clients never touch the filter: our team handles the scheduled service visits and sanitizing, plus service calls and repairs, all covered by the plan. Replacement filters are the one item billed separately, roughly once a year when we change them.
